TOPSOIL
Topsoil for the discerning gardener

We don’t sell soil as dug and we don’t sell cheap recycled soils. We offer just one type of topsoil at a very competitive delivered price, a very high quality organic rich, fertile, blended landscape *loam screened to 10mm. Called ‘Bury Hill Black’, it is suitable for most landscaping and amenity applications and one of the best products on the market where a quality outcome is essential.

This picture shows the soil being screened after having been blended. You can see the finished material in heaps whilst the over sized material is shown being removed on the nearest conveyor.

*Loam is the name given to soils, which contain a mixture of sand, silt and clay.

A bi-product of the de-silting work that took place at our fishery some 15 years ago, ‘Bury Hill Black’ conforms to BS3882 ‘Premium Grade’ which is the highest grade of topsoil achievable. With virtually no stone content, ‘Bury Hill Black’ is screened through a 10mm diamond screen producing a finished material, which is easy to work even in wet conditions owing to its fine light friable texture. Dark rich in colour with a PH close to neutral, ‘Bury Hill Black’ is blended using exacting amounts of silt, sand and soil conditioner which contributes dramatically to the materials long term performance, the result being a free draining topsoil with the soil conditioner providing a slow release fertilising action which will give bumper yields of flowers, fruit and vegetables in years to come.

A close up of the drum sieve showing the oversize material being removed leaving a very fine topsoil.

‘Bury Hill Black’ is ideal as a general purpose landscape loam and perfect for use in flower beds, raised boarders, vegetable gardens as well as for laying turf. Many of our customers also use ‘Bury Hill Black’ for grass seeding with equally great results owing to the high percentage of fines in the material being screened through a 10mm diamond mesh screener, which insures that the majority of the material screened much finer.

What is BS3882?
BS 3882:1994 sets the standard for soils in the UK, with soils conforming to one of 3 grades, premium, general purpose and economy, according to texture, stone content and fertility. ‘Bury Hill Black’ conforms to premium grade.

Quality Assured
Unlike many so-called ‘topsoil’s’, ‘Bury Hill Black’ is blended using our own organic core material and locally sourced sand and soil conditioner. The quality and blending of ‘Bury Hill Black’ is strictly monitored and reliably consistent, producing a dependable quality assured material through periodic testing by an independent analysis. Under no circumstances, do we ever use imported or recycled soils in the preparation of ‘Bury Hill Black’, which is free from contaminated waste such as glass or building residue.

This picture best shows the quality of our topsoil, note the dark rich colour when damp.
