PLEASE NOTE!
That due to an unprecedented increase in log orders this winter, we have unfortunately had to stop taking new orders.
However, the good news is that we are now in the process of massively expanding our on-site FIREWOOD operations for next
winter (2009/10) and from next summer (2009) we can guarantee our customers, both old and new a regular supply of top quality
dry seasoned hardwood logs which we deliver in clean large 1m3 bulk bags. As part of our expansion plans, we are also extending
our FREE DELIVERY zone to include much of north Surrey. If you are interested in buying some of the best firewood logs in Surrey,
please email us and we will get back to you next year.
Regards,
Bury Hill Topsoil & Logs.

Coal & Fuel
Whilst many of our customers are happy to burn just our logs, some prefer to add a bed of coal, which will increase the intensity of the heat of the fire whilst also helping to reduce the burn rate of the logs.
We offer three types of coal and fuel, House Coal Doubles and Brazier Smokeless Fuel both of which come in 20kg bags and Homefire Ovals Smokeless Fuel, which comes in 25kg bags. All three are suitable for open fires and multi-fuel stoves and are supplied in hooded stretched clean packed bags which can be delivered as part of a log order or when the order value exceeds 10 bags.
House Coal Doubles
This is a small to medium sized natural coal, which produces a long flame and low ash deposit. Suitable for open fires and multi-fuel stoves, this product is not suitable for burning in smoke controlled areas.
Brazier Smokeless Fuel
This is a high quality manufactured fuel with high heat and long burning characteristics. Suitable for open fires and multi-fuel stoves, this product is easy to lite, has a low ash deposit and is suitable for burning in smoke controlled areas.
Homefire Ovals Smokeless Fuel
One of the best fuels available, this is a manufactured premium quality fuel with high heat and long burning characteristics. Suitable for open fires and multi-fuel stoves, this product is easy to lite, has a low ash deposit and is suitable for burning in smoke controlled areas.

Delivery
Experience has taught us that most of our customers prefer their logs to be delivered in clean tidy bulk bags rather than strewn across their driveway. For this reason, we offer our logs in 1m3 bulk bags which allow us to deliver your logs exactly where you want them, subject of course to access restrictions. Your logs will then remain protected from the weather in the bag and continue to season until you are ready to use or stack them.
Why use firewood?
Firewood is an environmentally friendly fuel, which adds virtually no 'fossil' carbon dioxide footprint to our present environment and thus helps minimise the effects of climate change as compared to using gas, oil or coal. Firewood is also a renewable resource, so burning firewood today helps ensure that suitable supplies are available for our children and grandchildren tomorrow.
Seasoning and storing logs
Because trees contain a lot of water, freshly cut logs will contain around 50% water and are difficult to burn without some drying or seasoning taking place. Wood felled during one winter should be seasoned over the following summer and burnt the next winter. Some trees contain naturally less water than others, for example freshly felled ash contains only 33% moisture content. All our logs are fully seasoned and ready to use.
Burning logs
Some types of tree make better firewood than others. Broadleaved trees are denser than softwoods such as pines and provide more heat per similar sized bag or trailer load. In general ash, oak, beech, birch, sycamore, hornbeam are all first class firewoods. All conifers such as pine, plus sweet chestnut, and turkey oak are liable to throw sparks but can be used if very dry in a closed wood burning stove or boiler. Alder, willows and poplars are considered poor firewoods due to their high moisture content. Please note, that we do not use softwoods or high moisture content woods in our log processing.
There is an old poem on firewood, which to some extent holds true.
Beechwood fires are bright and clear
If the logs are kept a year,
Chestnut's only good they say,
If for logs 'tis laid away.
Make a fire of Elder tree,
Death within your house will be;
But ash new or ash old,
Is fit for a queen with crown of gold.
Birch and fir logs burn too fast
Blaze up bright and do not last,
it is by the Irish said
Hawthorn bakes the sweetest bread.
Elm wood burns like churchyard mould,
E'en the very flames are cold
But Ash green or Ash brown
Is fit for a queen with golden crown.
Poplar gives a bitter smoke,
Fills your eyes and makes you choke,
Apple wood will scent your room
Pear wood smells like flowers in bloom
Oaken logs, if dry and old
keep away the winter's cold
But Ash wet or Ash dry
a king shall warm his slippers by.
